SYNOPSIS - the episode begins after Jack realizes that Ethan was not part of the crew and that he was the one who had attacked Claire. Jack and Locke rush to the woods to capture Ethan when Locke realizes that they need to get together a search party and Jack should stay behind because the crew needs him for his medical expertise but Jack refuses to admit defeat. This is the second time that we have seen Jack feel responsible for someone when in fact he couldn't have done anything to prevent the death of the women in the ocean or knowing if Claire was telling the truth. This is probably because he is very moralistic and places great burden on himself to save somebodies life no matter what. as you might have guessed, this episode focuses on the expansion of Jack's history. from the flashbacks we learn how Jack became so committed to his job when he came to operate on his dad's ER patient when one of the nurses informed Jack that his father was under the influence while operating. he doesn't even commit to signing the papers proving his father's innocence until his father persuades him to give him another chance. Jack is very surprised when his father lies to the patients husband about the her death and how he has no guilt or remorse of what he did. flash forward to a board meeting where Jack's father is under investigation. during the questioning Jacks learns that his father lied to him about the patient being pregnant which doesn't sit well with Jack who right there and then tells the truth about what really happened. this is the reason why his father left for Australia knowing his life was over and why his mom demanded Jack to bring back his father when he was fully responsible for his demise.
back on the island Locke gets a search party that includes Boone and Kate. after a while the four spot Charlie's finger marked letters and they decide to follow until they find out the letters follow in one direction while foot prints follow a different direction. Jack and Kate take the letters way and eventually find Ethan who warns Jack to stop or else Charlie will die. Jack refuses to give up and follows Ethan until he find Charlie hanging by his head. Jack tries to provide CPR but with no sign of improvment he stops until he realizses that he cant be responsible for anymore deaths and continues until he brings back Charlie to life. unfortunately Claire is still missing and when they ask Charlie for guidance he responds by "they only wanted Claire". (Q - What does Ethan want from Claire)

  • while Jack and Kate head in one direction Locke and Boone follow a different trail. when Boone refuses to go back, Locke realizes how committed the kid really is. they both get a chance to each other more for instance Locke's real name is John and he used to work for a box company while Boone operated his mothers business. they follow the trail until it becomes clear to Boone there is no point anymore. when Boone tries to head back he stumbles on a large steal frame buried underneath his feet.
