LOST Season 1: Ep.8 - "Confidence Man"

Images from abc.com

SYNOPSIS - in this episode we finally get some answers about Sawyer, the mysterious only individual which everyone has come to hate. the letter which Sawyer is always reading about is actually a letter he wrote when he was a child to con man called Sawyer who had tricked his parents out of their money and as a result his dad couldn't take it so not only did his dad kill himself but also his mother. in the letter Sawyers says clearly that one day he will find the con man and make him pay. Sawyers disregard for the rest of the crew and individualist mentality means that he didn't really have anybody back on the real world and his only goal in life was to avenge his family. for example, when Boone attempts to take asthma medicine from Sawyer's box which he didn't have, Sawyer in return beats up Boone and fools everybody including Sayid and Jack in order to get Kate to kiss him. from the flashbacks we can see that he would get hold of a wife with a rich husband and fools them into investing in a phony scheme. now Sawyer is doing the same exact thing on the island for reasons we don't know. in the last scheme Sawyer was involved in, he sees a kid from the family he was scamming and suddenly it reminds him of his childhood and he realizes that he has become the very person he was trying to avenge.
as far the story of the crew goes, Sayid is caught is on the hunt to find the person who attacked him from the back. now when Sayid tries to question Locke, Locke points Sayid to Sawyer and explains that Sawyer doesn't really care about the crew and nor does he want them to get rescued. making Sayid believe that Sawyer is up to no good which seems really suspicious. when Boone shows bruised up, Jack gets really angry and confronts Sawyer and eventually attacks him. Sayid uses this opportunity to persuade Jack into letting him torture Sawyer into confessing about the attack and to give the asthma medicine.

CHARACTERS
  • when Sayid tortures Sawyer it brings out the worst in him. we get a glimpse of what Sayid used to do in the Republican guard. having realized this Sayid leaves the crew into the jungle to think about what he did when he promised to himself he wouldn't torture anymore. will Sayid return ever?
  • know about Shanon's asthma attack Sun gets some herbal medicine with help from Michael and gets Shanon calm and relaxed. Jin sees Sun helping out but doesnt say anything. what will it take for Jin to realize that he must work together with the crew?
  • the relationship between Kate and Sawyer is still in the open and what Sawyer did it doesn't look like Kate is going to give into Sawyers tricks.
  • the hatred between Jack and Sawyer is even more intense after what happened. will it get any worse or the relationship between them ever improve?
  • Charlie and Claire are getting even more closer when Charlie gets Claire to move into the caves after promising her that he will get a jar of peanut butter (imaginary one).

SYNOPSIS - the biggest revelation of the show so far happens in this episode. this is what makes LOST so appealing because you never know when its going to happen and when it does it changes everything. the focus of this episode centers on the life of Sun and Jin, the two Korean couple. we get to see how mysterious the couple are when Jin attacks Michael out of the blue. as a result Jin officially becomes the first prisoner of the crew. it was quite surprising to see in the flashbacks that Jin was actually a servant working for Sun's family. how could Jin has changed to such a harsh and cold person to Sun when he should be glad to have such a rich and beautiful women. as the episode reveals, Jin proposes to Sun by asking her father and gets the permission but only if he works for him in exchange. it seems quite alright until one day Jin enters the house covered with blood that Sun realizes what kind of man Jin has become working for her father. on one end Sun no longer feels happy or love for Jin but on the other end Jin completely loves Sun and he is willing to do anything to be together. this explains how Jin acts so crude towards Sun but at the same time expresses deep love for her. from the flashback we also get a glimpse of Sun trying to run away from Jin but eventually she doesn't and stands by him. that split decision she made cost her being on the island.

Locke comes out and shares to Jack that what if the plane crash was meant to be and that he has seen the island in the eye and it was beautiful. whatever that means.
as far as the progress on the island is going, Jack finds a cave where there is fresh water and nice cover for everyone. he also finds his fathers coffin which turns out to be empty. strange, how the body disappear. when he gets back to the crew he reminds everybody that they need to stay together and get organized or else they will die alone on the island.

some of the crew decide that they should reach the cockpit and attempt to find the transreciever to call for a distress call. when they reach the cockpit, they find the pilot still alive. the pilot who we never get a proper name discloses that the plane when slit apart was 6 hours off course when the distress call when out. if anybody attempt to find it would take weeks before any sign of rescue would show up.

the Pilot episode introduces several characters but we only get six of their names. Jack who is the man who begins the episode. he immediatily qualifies as the doctor of the group. he represents the authortative figure of the crew.
Jack becomes very close to Kate who helps him stich up his wound in the episode. she seems to be mysterious. when the rest of the crew where trying coupe with the crash, she appeared from the woods, lost and confused. what was she doing there?
Jack gets some help from Hurley, who is the chubby individual that assists the girl that seems to be preganant. he seems to be a very likeable individual.
the character that we get the most info from is Charlie. who is supposedly a member of the rock bank group called Drive Shaft. he seems to be very fullfill of himself and is very suspecious because when Charlie, Kate and Jack had visited the cockpit he was doing something in the bathroom. what was he doing?
we also get introduced to Sayid, who had been trying to create a large enough fire for the rescue to notice. he seems to be very proactive and skillfull individual.
we also get to know Boone, who is a close friend or boyfriend of the girl which seems to be bitchy and is very confident that the rescue team is going to appear soon. Boone seems to be very quite but very loyal individual.
some of the characters that we get introduced and dont get their names are two Korean couples that dont want anything to do with the rest of the crew. we see tall individual with blonde hair who doesnt seem very worried about the plane crash. we also get introdued to a father and child. the child had called out for someone called Vincent. that could be the dog that starried Jack in the eye in the woods. and lastly we see a bald individual who always seems to be starring at the ocean and totally relaxed, enjoying the rain.
